HANNAH EMERY
There’s nothing quite like festive limbo; timekeeping is abstract, leftovers are for dinner, loungewear is the new uniform. And, it’s socially acceptable to spend days binge-watching a good series. In anticipation, we asked around Hush HQ to find the best shows out there. From laugh-out-loud British comedy to a heartwarming documentary, here are 6 titles that we’re watching on repeat.
Motherland“Even on very unfunny days, this British sitcom never fails to make me laugh. It’s dry, accurate and very easy to watch (well, binge). While the subject might sound close to home (it’s about a group of mums as they navigate the challenges of parenthood), this show is hilarious because it’s just too relatable. But, don’t worry, you don’t have to be a parent to find this series funny. In fact, I love it because it reminds me of my chaotic school runs as a child – although I probably shouldn’t admit that!” – Abi, Creative Team | Halt and Catch Fire“Apparently, 'halt and catch fire' is an instruction used by coders to stop a computer from working. But don’t be fooled by the name of this series; it’s really a story of love, friendship, and family relationships set in Texas and California in the 80s and 90s – the dawn of the internet revolution and the start of the digital age. Why watch it? I loved it for the dial-up, the internet 1.0 nostalgia, the Bonobo soundtrack, and the passionate but destructive on-off romance between Lee Pace and Mackenzie Davis, which kept me hooked through 4 seasons.” – Melissa, Chief Creative Officer |
Will & Harper“I’m a bit of a Will Ferrell fan, and so when I heard he’d worked on a new Netflix documentary, I was excited to watch. It transpired to be a 1 hour 54 minute exploration of friendship, allyship and finding belonging (all of which made me cry happy tears). The show follows Will and his good friend Harper Steele as they take a road trip from New York to LA – with the intention of reintroducing Harper to America as her true self, a trans woman. With beautiful scenery, an eccentric soundtrack and lots of honest, candid conversations, I’m recommending this to all my friends.” – Sam, Creative Team | Halston“Before I started working in social media and marketing, I actually began my career in fashion design. So, when Netflix released their biopic series about legendary American designer Roy Halston, I couldn’t wait to binge it. With Ewan McGregor as the man himself, it chronicles his chaotic journey from a relatively unknown Chicago milliner to the figure responsible for the sequin-adorned disco aesthetic of 1970s New York. I loved how this series pulls you into all the glitz and glamour of the Studio 54 era, but also how it depicts the heartbreaking reality of the AIDS crisis. It’s only 5 episodes, so a great bite-sized watch for the festive break.” – Annie, Brand Team |
Mr. & Mrs. Smith“This eight-part spy thriller might be based on the blockbuster caper starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, but the execution is worlds apart. John and Jane – played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine – are thrown together by a shadow agency in the first episode and we watch as their relationship deepens and their assignments get increasingly unpredictable – one minute they’re fighting off masked assailants in the Italian Dolomites, and the next they’re hosting a dinner party in their beautiful Manhattan townhouse. It’s fast-paced, witty and entertaining. I devoured it in one weekend.” – Lizzy, Editorial Team | Martha“I was familiar with Martha Stewart (she’s a household name, after all) but it was only when I watched the viral Netflix documentary that I realised how much I didn't know. It’s full of frank interviews and unseen photos, letters and diary entries – which makes for a fascinating deep dive into her life, the story behind her fame and that infamous trial. I can totally see why she’s become known as ‘the original influencer’, and whether you warm to her no-BS approach or not, it’s impossible not to admire both her success and her ability to bounce back time and time again. A must-watch for all women.” – Jihan, Ecommerce Team |
